What Causes Germline Mutations
Germline mutations are genetic alterations that occur in reproductive cells—sperm or eggs—and can be passed from parents to offspring. These mutations are caused by various factors, including errors during DNA replication, exposure to radiation or harmful chemicals, environmental toxins, aging of parental reproductive cells, and inherited defects in DNA repair mechanisms. Unlike somatic mutations, germline mutations are heritable and may contribute to inherited genetic disorders, evolutionary variation, and susceptibility to diseases across generations.
