D-loop Region
The D-loop region is a specialized non-coding segment of the mitochondrial genome that plays a crucial role in regulating replication and transcription of mitochondrial DNA. It is located within the Mitochondrial DNA and is the most variable and mutation-prone region of the mitochondrial genome. Structurally, the D-loop forms a triple-stranded DNA configuration, where a short third strand (7S DNA) displaces part of the original double helix—hence the name “displacement loop.” This unique structure is essential for initiating DNA replication and controlling gene expression within mitochondria.
