Down Syndrome Symptoms

Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21 (Trisomy 21). The symptoms vary widely among individuals, ranging from mild to moderate, and affect physical growth, cognitive development, and overall health. Common physical features include a flattened facial profile, upward-slanting eyes, small ears, a single deep crease across the palm, short stature, and low muscle tone (hypotonia). Individuals with Down syndrome often experience developmental delays, including delayed speech and motor skills, and mild to moderate intellectual disability. Medical conditions such as congenital heart defects, hearing and vision problems, thyroid disorders, gastrointestinal issues, and increased susceptibility to infections are also frequently observed. With early intervention, inclusive education, and appropriate healthcare, individuals with Down syndrome can lead healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives.
