Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC)
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver cancer, developing from hepatocytes-the main cells of the liver. It most often occurs in people with chronic liver disease, especially cirrhosis caused by hepatitis B or C infection, long-term alcohol use, or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH).HCC may not cause symptoms early on, but later can lead to abdominal pain, unintended weight loss, jaundice, or abdominal swelling. Diagnosis typically involves imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI) and blood tests such as alpha-fetoprotein (AFP).Treatment options depend on the stage and liver function and may include surgical resection, liver transplantation, local ablative therapy, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), targeted therapies, and immunotherapy. Prevention focuses on vaccination against hepatitis B, treating hepatitis B and C, reducing alcohol use, and managing metabolic risk factors.
